Blog EntryLife is short...Mar 18, '08 7:19 PM
for everyone
i was on duty in a tertiary hospital for 24hours under the Dept of Internal Medicine in Calamba City, Laguna  when a Code Blue was called in the Emergency Room..patient on his early 40's was brought in DOA (dead-on-arrival).. he was immediately intubated, CPR was done..IV fluid was inserted and medications were given..adrenaline 6amps, atropine 3amps where each ampule were given at different time intervals..sodium bicarb was also given... while ongoing CPR, i explained to the wife and 2 daughters of the patient that we will do our best to revive him...since the patient has a flat line tracing on the cardiac monitor with dilated pupils, i didn't give them any false hopes....in my estimate, the approximate time of arrest maybe more than 30minutes before rushing in the ER..
but to my surprise, a cardiac rhythm was appreciated..we quickly added some inotropics (dopamine and dobutamine drip) hoping that we could somehow bring the patient to life..but because of the massive heart damage and with a history of severe valvular defect, patient succumb @4:47am after 45mins of resuscitation., i can hear loud cries from his wife and daughters..with an early age, he left his family...

I really can't imagine myself being a doctor and giving the family the bad news. :(

yep, we should make the most of it in our lives..if we want to say something or anything at all especially to those we care about, never hesitate at all..because at present you're here and after minute you're gone...only God knows...:D

yeah, it's really hard to inform them, especially in a life and death situation..but telling the truth is better than giving any false hopes...must explain that there is no such thing as a 100% when it comes to mortality, there is always a miracle...it is also important to advise them of the spiritual side, that there is life after death..and that the patient should be seen by a priest or a pastor if possible...God is always above all... :D

*parang blog na rin reply ko ah..hahaha.. *

tsk tsk. i remember when i was at cardinal santos hospital nung new year due to severe stomach pain. may DOA din, & later on I just heard the family crying. it's so tragic, not to mention that they have just celebrated new year the night before. it's so sad. :(

noted Paul keep up the good work. It really hard to lose someone so young. My son's teacher recently died and she was only 29 due to asthma attack

waaaaa... yung pagiging doctor... grabe! you have to be really careful, intelligent, dedicated and all.. and, you have to have a very strong personality.. imagine hearing family crying over someone's death... waaa... di ko ata kaya yun... :'(

you not only have to have a strong heart, but have the heart to go & move on when patients die in your arms~ there's not many people like you... thank you for making a difference!

thanks jenn.. :D
yep, one must have a strong heart..it is always a battle between denial and acceptance especially with the immediate family..
as a doctor, one also must be a councilor.. comforter.. for them to somehow understand any situation that are beyond their knowledge...
